In Malawi and probably in other parts of Africa, many Christians
believe that God created man and women unequal, the (male) man first,
and then the woman to be the man’s helper or maybe even servant.
Following the creation stories the authors argue that God created woman
and man equal (Genesis 1 and 2) and that only sin changed the rule over
the animals to the man’s rule over the woman. And in the beginning God
did not create the woman as the man’s “helpmeet”, but as his redeemer.
And when the man so the help that God had provided, he exclaimed: “Now
this is flesh of my flesh and bones of my bones!” Female male equality
is indeed God’s original design.
