Elias Edise Courson

Dr. Elias Edise Courson lectures in the Department of Philosophy at Niger Delta University, Nigeria, and has conducted extensive research on the hydrocarbon-induced crisis in the Niger Delta. Trained in conflict mediation/mitigation by the United Nations University for Peace and the United States Institute for Peace (USIP), Dr. Courson was an African Humanities Program (AHP) fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) (2021-2022) and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Cambridge’s Centre of African Studies (2018-2019). His fellowships also include the Social Science Research Council’s (SSRC) Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa fellowship (2012), the African Peacebuilding Network (APN) Collaborative Working Group Research grant (2017), the Rotary World Peace Fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley (2008–2010), and the Luce Foundation on Green Governance/Peace fellowship at the Institute of International Studies, UC Berkeley (2006–2007). Dr. Courson holds a PhD in Geography and an MA in Peace and Conflict Resolution from the University of California, Berkeley, as well as BA and MA degrees in Philosophy from Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Ibadan, respectively.
