Juma Volter MWAPACHU has had a long career in public service, the private sector and civil society in Tanzania. He has a law degree from the University College, Dar es Salaam (part of the University of East Africa) and a post-graduate Diploma in International Law and Diplomacy from the Indian Academy of International law, New Delhi. He was Minister Counsellor in the Embassy of Tanzania to Ethiopia, and later in Tanzania High Commission to India. He was also the Ambassador of Tanzania to France. In 2006, he was appointed Secretary-General of East African Community, a post he held for five years. In that capacity, he also chaired the Committee of Chief Executives in the COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite. Juma Mwapachu has been Global President of the Society for International Development (SID) and Secretary-General of the Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture. He is/has been the Chairman of the Board of Directors of five organisations/companies and a member of the board of eight companies/corporations. He has also served as a member of several presidential commissions. Juma Mwapachu has been president of the Convocation, member and Vice Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Dar es Salaam, and Chairman of the Council of the University of Dodoma. He was awarded the Moran of the Order of the Golden Heart (MGH) by Kenya President Mwai Kibaki. He holds honorary doctorate degrees conferred by the University of Dar es Salaam, and by the National University of Rwanda. He has authored four books and is co-editor of two books.
